When designing any space, you can take different approaches. One approach is to plan every detail, execute the design, and enjoy the completed space. Another approach is to move more slowly and allow the space to evolve as you find pieces you love. For my office, I opted for the latter. In fact, that’s the route I’m taking for my entire apartment, and I’ve been loving every minute of it.
Now let me show you around my space as it’s coming together and offer my tips for easily adding style to a home office.
1. Decor with a Purpose
One of the most important aspects of an office is functional storage. Paper, pens, notebooks, and other office supplies need a home or things can quickly get out of hand. When I’m shopping for HomeGoods, I’m always on the hunt for unique and beautiful vessels, boxes, and baskets. I tuck them all around my home to keep essentials handy but out of sight. Trays collect items on a desk, a basket hides an unsightly planter, and a wood box stores extra printer paper. Get creative with your storage!
2. Quirky Accessories
I’m pretty sure that adding a fun accessory or two is part of my design advice for any room. And it’s no exception for the office. I’m loving all of the plaques and signs I’ve been finding at my local HomeGoods. I was especially attracted to this marble “#boss” accessory. It’s chic and funny, but it’s an important reminder that in running my own business, I have to take charge.
3. Add a Plant or Two
You definitely want to pop a few plants in your home office. Not only are they great for improving air quality, but they also add life and texture to your decor. If you don’t have room for a large house plant, a bouquet of fresh flowers or an orchid will work beautifully instead.
4. Stay Organized
I’ve been working from home for a number of years now, and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s sometimes challenging to stay motivated. (Especially when the internet, television, and fridge are just a step or click away.) That’s why I rely on tools in my office to keep me on track. Some of my organizational essentials: calendar, planners, notepads, and dry erase boards. When I was shopping, HomeGoods had such a large selection of these items – it was hard to pick just a few! I chose my favorites, and let’s just say – they work perfectly in the space.
Growing up, I can remember my mom always telling me to turn on a light when I was working on my homework late into the evening. Being a bit older now, I definitely appreciate task lighting. That’s why I’ve added a few lamps to my space. With one on my desk and two behind it, I have plenty of light for late night work sessions. For a more homey feel, I like lamps with shades because they defuse the light. I found these lamps at HomeGoods and wow – not only are they functional – but they are pieces of art! They add great depth and beauty to the space.
